Upgrading

Hey everybody,

I'm on a slight budget, and was planning on buying this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141429

( Kingston ValueRAM 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) System Memory - Retail )

I have two sticks of 512MB DDR ram.. and opened up the case to get as much info as possible to see if my current two sticks of 512MB would be compatible with this Kingston 1G DDR ram. Here are some things I wrote down:

Smart Modular Technologies, Inc.
333
CL2.5
Infineon

If you haven't noticed I'm pretty computer-insides dumb, so if those keywords are useless I'm sorry! Anyway.. is there anything there that would be incompatible with the Kingston 1G DDR ram stick? Is there anything else you need to know to know that?

Thanks!!

pentium 4 3.0 Ghz processor
1 gig DDR ram
GeForce 7800GS
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. P4C800-E Rev 1.xx

My graphics card is good (especially for my budget) but its extremely limited because of the lack of ram.

Well everything seems OK, but the problem is the different make of RAM..
Mixing and matching different brand RAM is an iffy issue. At times it works and at others it won't.

Hi,

Kalim is right, you are best off getting a 2 x 1 GB kit. This RAM has been verified as compatible with your motherboard on Patriot's web site.

Ok well I already bought it yesterday and it just arrived today--about to plug it in. I'll let you know how it goes.

Im pretty sure it got really good reviews (97 reviews, 5/5 stars) because of its good compatibility. We'll see

Thanks.

I just put it in and booted up my computer, I get a black screen with a flashing white underscore, like its waiting for you to type. Waited for 10 minutes, still stays at black screen.

!!!

Should I try rearranging the slots the RAM is in?

Ok nevermind, got it working and my computer recognizes 2.0 GB of ram now.

It has greatly improved my frame rates (like for Supreme commander... used to be about 3-5 FPS now its around 70) and battlefield 2142...

but I still feel a bit weird.. it doesnt seem to have a huge effect on some games (half life 2: lost coast i tried right after installing, had only a bit more FPS as without the extra gig) and it made me activate windows after booting it up (I already did that...)

other than that, its working fine. I changed the way it was arranged.. originally it was, with four slots:

Empty | 512MB | Empty | 512MB

and at first I put in the 1gig like this:

Empty | 512MB | 1G | 512MB

and it didn't work... so i rearranged it:

Empty | 1G | 512MB | 512MB

now it booted up and worked fine, except it messed up my date and time and i had to reactivate windows. can you tell me what to expect with this new RAM? what will it help do, what won't it help do, and anything other info?

thanks a lot!

The reason wasn't working was because you had channel conflicts.

You should expect better performance mainly in gamming and 64 bit enviornments.
