CPU Failed Due to Overclocking for Memory Speeds
I have two 512mb ram, one Kingston HyperX and one PNY both at 216mhz(pc3500) advertised speed, but its hard for my memory to operate at even 200mhz.
I overclocked my cpu from 2.4 to 3.0(240fsb), and its fine for my memory, but i have to use a 5:4 ratio for my memory to work at 200mhz, which makes it a PC3200 stick. However, it is impossible for my memory to work at 1:1 ratio, even if i under-clock below 2.4, (strangely, i can overclock at a 5:4 ratio and get 200mhz, but cannot get 200mhz from 1:1 ratio!?!) . It fails to achieve 200mhz, much less the advertised 216mhz. I used cpu-z, and it says my Kingston needs timings of 2.5-4-4-9 to work at 216, but for my PNY, its very strange. I think it was falsely advertised, and it doesnt even give me 217 timings, only 166mhz and 200mhz timings. http://img251.imageshack.us/my.php?i...ntitledil2.png Is the PNY stick lying to me? How can i get it to operate at 216mhz without it saying "CPU failed due to overclocking"? More voltage, Refund that PNY, further underclocking, slower timings? ALSO! My motherboard lies to me too, i ordered a Asus P4P-800-Deluxe, and it has all the stickers and stuff saying it is, but in fact its not, its just P4P-800, but I'm fine with that; everyone should check! you cant get the best memory tweaks using mixed matched memory sticks!
I am shocked the mixing it worked at all! the socket 478 boards were VERY fussy about memory

so
is it due to my mixed memory the reason for it not working at advertised speeds? They are same speeds though, i just ordered 2 more sticks of HyperX, i wonder if i should sell my PNY to get another stick of it. Yes/No?

try without mixing first to see what happens. If it works, then an emphatic yes is in order.

I very much doubt that you'll be able to run a 2.4->3GHz OC on a 856chipset S478 mobo/CPU but for moments. That is Core 2 Duo OC levels and requires big cooling and higher VDimm and VCore just to get stable. Momentary higher speed runs will not be OC's and will definitely not last. Look at your voltages and temperatures before you burn your CPU and componenets.
You'll need matched pair of RAM with the same timings at least to give it a whizz. If your default CPU is 240x10 then running at different ratios will get you the 200MHz if its capable in your BIOS (some BIOSs don't allow it). I mean depending on your CPU keep your RAM clock high and CPU clock low. Whats your CPU FSB? If its a Celeron it probably won't run at DDR400 exact which I've encountered many times having one myself. ![]() |

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/5683/asdfen1.png But I thought you could control timings and crap via bios, meaning the memory timings don't matter as long as you keep them all the same. Anyways, so if i throw/sell my PNY stick, my HyperX memory will be able to reach higher speeds? Also, should i get 2.0gb of 200@ 2.5-3-3-9, or 1.5gb of 216@2.5-4-4-9? one more thing, theres a sticker on my PNY that says warranty void if removed, and says 434mhz, is it lying to me? I think that it could never ever reach those speeds. Last edited by supracuh : 02-19-2007 at 12:42 PM. |

Do that, you need to. ![]() Quote:

you can (try) lower the timings later after you achieve a stable OC. Quote:
