Will this PSU be enough?
Hi
This is my first post on the forums. I would like to know if this PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182016 will be good enough to run an AMD 64 x 2 4200+, 2 gigs ram, Nvidia 7950GT 512MD, 250GB HD and 2 CD/DVD drives? Thanks!! - Ace101 Last edited by Ace101 : 11-28-2006 at 06:18 PM. |

Don't get that one, get the one blackduck30 recommended.
You won't find one that will run that rig very long for 50 bucks. Read this http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/motherboards-bios-cpu/107466-power-supply-information-selection.html |

You are restricting yourself and not going to be saving money long term if you plan to upgrade in the future, but if they wont or can't go with that then the following is not bad IMO.

I second Doby's recomendation. You don't want to risk your entire computer. If a cheap PSU ends up kicking the bucket, it could damage some or all of your other components (I don't think you want to have to buy a new CPU soon down the road, do you?). My suggestion would be to look for a 7900GT or GTX instead and take the money you'd save on the video card to put into the PSU.

That is a great suggestion Ralck, The 7900Gt is still a great card, i have one. The better power supply will make the system far more stable. You can even just get 1G of ram for now and save up for another gig. You will not regret getting a power supply that will service your needs without hassle. Your power supply is really the heart of your build and should not be skimped on.

with power supplies you get what you pay for thermaltake are not rated as quality supplies and 500w is to low for your system
go for the one recommended above by blackduck it is a good price i had to pay $A300 for it

:) not when you consider the problems and unstability of a cheap PSU. I have the exact PSU and it cost me 240 dollars here in australia. I really don't think you understand the importance of your power supply, EVERTHING runs off your power supply

I agree with my fellow team members, it is not worth the risk getting a low quality PSU. Blackduck has recommended an excellent PSU. I looked around Newegg, and you can't do much better that quality 650w for $109. If you get a bad PSU and it fails, it could take the whole computer with it.

Thanks for the help guys. This system is basically a Christmas present from my parents, but I still don't know if they'll go with a 109 dollar PSU. Anyone else recommend a 60/70 dollar one?
What about these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153028 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104934 P.S. the links for the PSUs you guys recommended are dead. Last edited by Ace101 : 11-30-2006 at 01:31 PM. |

Just checked the links and all but 1 worked for me, maybe they are updating their pages or something ?
Anyway out of those 2 I would say the 2nd one without question, but as to if it will be as good as the one suggested I'll leave the others to comment on. |

Unfortunately I can not recommend something that can or will give you trouble. I looked at the ones you posted up and the second one was 89 dollars, I am sure you can spend the extra 20 and go the silverstone 650W.
I also fully agree with dai on this also, you have to climb above the 500W mark http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817163108
