What monitor do you have? a CRT, LCD, TFT...?
The problem many times is with the "monitor cables and adapters". Any one of the connectors going bad can cause this. If it was your power supply, your hard drive, fans, IDE's and PCI's would also show this. I've seen some overheating produce the same effect aswell. But the only issue I've seen being exact is when the monitor leads or the monitor backlight is going. It will come on until it overheats because of too high voltage or for a little while and then go off. You may even be able to see everything on the screen if you open a webpage and scroll down when it switches off, looking very closely. If you can see all, just not lit up, its just the backlight thats gone. |

I have a crt monitor. My monitor I bought it in 2000. If the monitor is going bad would the hard drive light stay on steady? I know once when this happened I did go into the bios and when I checked my voltage The +12 and the +5 were both highlighted in red and the +12 read at 10.64 v and the +5 read at 3.42 volts. I do not know if this means anything or not. Thanks Mike

Thanks Mike. If your sure of what you saw there then yes, you've certainly got a bad PSU.
I suggest to download and run Sensors View if you can and it will tell you all the temperatures, speeds and voltages in real time, just to be sure. Thats if you can get it on long enough to download (simple) and install (simple) and then run it (even easier). Last edited by Kalim : 11-30-2006 at 02:40 PM. |

LOL ! I never switch my rigs off, 3 of them that are here run 18-24 hours/day.
No kidding :| Depends if you really need it though. I know I do. I wouldn't leave it on in other cases, it costs $$$$ and is always degrading the life let alone adding heat. The more use a healthy product gains the quicker its quality will depreciate, obviously. |

So I leave them run 24/7 but if it was not for this research I would shut them down overnight but I honestly don't think it matters to the health of the computer one way or the other. A computer running at idle uses about as much as a 60 watt light bulb, so if electricity is a concern then it should be shutdown. Also consider the fact that if the computer is running several hours doing nothing it wastes electric and if we all left them run for nothing that would add up |
