what will i need

i'm wondering what kind of psu i'll need at hte minimum to run the new system i'm having built. specs are as follows

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core Processor LGA775Conroe 2.40GHZ etc..

Asus p5B ATX LGA775 Conroe 965P

Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 2gb (2x1GB)

ATI Radeon X850 XT PE PCI-E 256MB / 256BIT 1.18GHZ GDDR3

Creative Sound Blaster X-FI FATAL1TY FPS24BIT Sound Card

Sony DRUsomething DVD burner and a Dvd Rom

X-Blade ATX Case - has 2x80mm case fans and 1x120mm case fan, LCD temperature readout and fan conrol, as well as a bunch of lights.

Right now i have a 400w PSU that i can reuse, but I'm not sure if that'll be enough.

Greetings mc900, and Welcome to TSF!

Go to the link "Power Supply Calculator" in my signature, and enter your system specs; when done, click on calculate in the bottom right corner.
This will then tell you the recommended Wattage for a PSU;however, we recommended that you add 30% to the total to cover for 'full loading'.

Post back with the results.

wattage came up as 365, so +30% puts me at around 475

any suggestions on a good 500 watt power supply?

Antec; Thermaltake, or any of the better brands....don't be mislead by price.
Remember the old saying..."You pay for what you get".
The Power Supply [in my opinion] is perhaps the third most important item in a computer's structure.

Have a look at newegg.com here.

the psu calculator already accounts for more load than your computer will ever undergo.... however, electronics do age, and the psu will put out a lot of heat and be less efficient at full load, so a good 500w psu isnt a bad idea.

I personally would go for a Fortron 600 watt PSU at newegg.com for about $139.00

or the OCZ 600 watt gamer for $125.00

last but not least Antec True Power-2 550 watt for $89.00

or the Enermax 535 watt for about $100.00

anything less than 525 watt I think would be a real mistake >>>>> especially for a gamer gaming with a high grade video card puts out alot of system heat >>>> the PSU ratings dont do their testing and labeling while pushing the snot outta of a video card! the more heat in the box the less power the PSU can produce they actually trip their circuit protection at around 52C

a 600 watt PSU would never work hard in your system , not even while gaming
