Hair pulling printer problem

I have Windows Me and a Lexmark Printer Z617. Brand New printer. When loading software is complete it says printer not communicating with computer be sure it is hooked up to usb port. I tried several times. I checked the usb port in device manager and it says I have unknown device hooked up. I also have new usb cable. What is going on?
Thanks for any helps.

Lets try uninstalling the printer software and drivers then reinstall it. When you are about to reinstall make sure it is not plugged in and when it asks you to plug it in or check if it is connected connect the device and wait for it to recognize.
