Problems setting printer as default

I have a pc that is has two network printers setup; everyday (sometimes multiple times in a day) the printer looses the default printer checkmark. The printers worked correctly until a few days ago. When you right-click and select as default it does not always check the printer. I can go into the printer properties and print a test page, but if I print from any other program it tells me there are no printers installed. Eventually the checkmark comes up and everything works fine for awhile or until the PC is restarted.

I have performed a system restore, restarted the print spooler, reinstalled the printers with the most current drivers from the manufacturer, and verified that windows is up to date. None of these actions has resulted in solving the issue.

This is an HP PC with XP Pro, 2.8Gh, 512RAM. The printers are also from HP.
