PC won't print through lpt1

Hi, i recently set up a pc for a friend with windows xp pro on it. He has 3 printers - 1 usb, and 2 parallel (HP deskjet 550c and HP laserjet 4L). The problem is, i can't get either of the parallel printers to work on it. I tested them both on a laptop and the 550c works fine, but i can't seem to get the laserjet working on either.

I've tried changing the parallel port mode to eco, ecc etc in the bios, the irq, and various settings in the printer properties, but nothing makes a difference. One thing i noticed though that was when i restart the pc, the 550c makes some noise as if it is receiving a signal from the pc.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? They are driving me round the bend and i've tried everything i can think of!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Peter

Do you have 3 printer icons in your printers and faxes folder? Does all of the printers show in the printers and faxes folder?

No, there is just the USB printer (Epson stylus photo RX520) and the HP Deskjet 550C. I had to add the lpt printers manually as they would not detect and have tried to do them individually; ie by removing all the printers and trying 1 at a time.

Please make sure the printer icon has a check mark and indicating ready before printing a test page. Sometimes, if the printer won't be detected automatically, it will appear as offline in printers and faxes folder.
