Confused going nuts

i have a brother mfc 420cn printer. my problem is that it will not do anything. it shows "unable to change - see troubleshoot in user manual" . i have found it and did what it says but to no avail. i do not use the fax part of the machine. when i first got the machine i had windows xp now i have vista. i went online and downloaded the one for vista and it worked fine for a few minutes. (printed out about 6 pages) then it showed this and i can not get out. i have turned it off and then back on but nothing. PLEASE HELP ME.

Re: going nuts

Did you uninstall the old Windows XP driver before installing the vista one?

If possible, try it on another computer to see whether the problem is your computer or you printer.

Re: going nuts

I'm not sure what you are asking. But, the screen on the printer showed "Unable to change- see troubleshooting and routine mantience chapter 11 users guide." the machine was hooked to a different computer. with windows xp. The new computer has windows vista. The code that showed up, while talking to the tech from brothers, showed machine error 04. He just told me to find my reciept and then call him back. Do you possibly know what that code means? Can I fix it myself, take it to be fixed or just get another machine? Thank you for answering.

Re: going nuts

Yes quite possibly you may be able to fix this yourself,

Have a look here: "Troubleshooting and routine Maintenance" #11
http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocu...0CN_EN_286.PDF

You will need to go a couple of pages down to find your problem:
unable to change.
