HP C7180 Scanner/fax/copier stopped working in that order

I have been using this all-in-one for some time now and I have been happy with it overall. The print functions work just fine. However, I needed to scan something the other day (to a thumb drive so independent of a computer) and the light bar went across about 3/4 of the way and then froze with a horrible noise. The same thing happened when I tried to fax. The light bar just froze after getting 3/4 of the way across the bed.

The strange bit was that it would still copy? Go figure, it is the same function but different output. The copier has made it about 2 months past the scanner problem but now the copier has acted the same. It starts to read the document and then freezes with a horrible noise about 3/4 of the way through.

The printer is still working just fine.... for now.

What can I do to get the copier/scanner working again?
