Printing performance

I had an HP Officejet 9110 and when I sent it a print job the printer icon only stayed in the PC's system tray for a few seconds and then went away, the printer then printed the job completely independantly without relying on the PC at all, I could evn turn off the PC and the printer would keep printing the entire print job.

After about 100,000 prints the printer failed due to bad maintenance on my part so I decided to upgrade to the HP Officejet Pro L7780. I've so far done about 80,000 prints on this new one but it always stays connected to the computer during print jobs and does not print independantly.

It's not usually a problem but on high quality graphic prints the computer's hard drive access light stays solid on for the entire print job and the computer becomes extemely slow. When I'm doing a multi thousand job print (which is most of my print jobs) and also need to work on the PC doing other things at the same time this becomes a real problem.

So why does my new printer depend on the PC while my old one printed independantly? My ne one has 96 MB ram my old was 128, 96MB should be more than enough to print a 1-2 MB graphic page (especially since it's an all in one and can print without a PC).

If I can't get it to print completely independantly, is there any way to improve the performance? I've been playing around with different print processors and data types and I seem to be getting slightly better results.

Thanks for any help with this frustrating issue.

Re: Printing performance

BTW does anyone know what a "print server" is and would it get the load off my pc and is it a reasonable cost?
