Epson CX5000 multifunction prints but won't scan

This scanner/printer has been working for me for over a year. but the problems started when my old computer died and I replace it with a Dell Vostro 200.

The device is connected via USB and I'm running XP Pro, SP3...and the printing function works fine. The "print-from-scan" button on the device scans and prints fine (showing that the scanning function is mechanically working fine). ALL functions, except scanning using the PC & software, work fine.

I have contacted EPSON and they have been of no help whatsoever.

I have contacted DELL, and they claim no responsibility. They say it's an Epson problem (even though it worked with my old computer AND it works with a 2nd computer I have at home). In other words, it will work on most anything other than the Dell I need it to work on!

I have unistalled, reinstalled the drivers, downloaded drivers (nothing really new on Epson's web site), and all get the same results (on this particular Dell). The device shows up in MANAGER as "Unknown" ...."Epson CX4900/CX5000/DX5000".

My 'gut' tells me that there is something about the Dell that is blocking the scan drivers from being either installed correctly, registered correctly or being found correctly.

Any great ideas?
