Printers won't connect

I have two printers, and HP Officejet 5610 All in one and an Hp LaserJet 1020. For no apparent reason, the computer, a Gateway GT 4016 64 bit Media Center Xp with one 180GB hard drive. started refusing to recognize the printers, even though in the control panel, the printers were listed and said to be working. The computer hadn't crashed, it seems to work perfectly, other than a persistant message that pops up occasionally saying that instruction set "OXD15ef979 at 0x00000000 couldn't be read, hit cancel to debug the problem. I hit cancel and everything seems to work fine except the printers.
I've rebooted several times, after uninstalling and reinstalling both printers, several times. When I try to print someting, I get one of two messages. One says the spooler isn't installed or sometimes it says it isn't installed. The other message says there are no printers installed, go to the control panel and install them. The contral panel and the printer settings which can be accessed via the settings button above the start button say the printers aren't connected.
To add insult to injury, sometimes, not very often or not for very long, the printers to work. I've turned everything off, rebooted with the printers not hooked up, hooked them up, rebooted, the same result. Naturally I've run all the spyware, and virus programs and everything came out clean. The installations are off the original disks. Any help would be appreciated. Frank
