HP Photosmart 2600 printer -fax

I tried to fax a document with the above HP unit as per the screen display and I am not able to fax any. I removed my telephone connection to the telephone jack and inserted the printer connetion to the telephone jack. Isn't that all I am supposed to do and them follwo the screen display on the printer to fax? Also, after I reconnected my telphone back to the jack now my telephone is dead. Why? TWo problems-I cannot fax and I lost my telephone line also. PLease help!!!!!

Do you have another telephone jack elsewhere you can plug the phone into? Clearly the problems are related. There could be some physical damage to the phone jack which would explain both problems.

It was coincidental that the telephone line that day was knocked out. Verizon fixed it that afternoon and I have phone line. I will try to fax and see if that works.
