brother mfc440cn can't install/uninstall on vista

have a new hp touchsmart with vista. made the mistake of trying to install the brother mfc software from a disk that i now know is not vista compatable. Can't uninstall the software, even when I go to the brother support site for their special ininstall tool. When trying to uninstall i get the installer error "this is made for Vista. Please insert your Cd" iso41.

Can't find reference to the that error anywhere and brother says its an operating system error. have stripped all remnants fo the brother sofware from the registry and then tried to install the full vista package from the brother site. get's half way through and says i don't have enough memory and to reboot and re-install. didn't work and have plenty of disk space. this is the only app I've had problems with. Can install the print ddrivers but not the fax/scanner drivers or software no matter what i do. any help is greatly appreciated.

is the machine a hp or brother.

it cant be both.

also is the machine actually compatible with Vista.
