printer networking problems

OK, I have a Canon iP5000 that I used to have connected directly to my computer and shared to access it from my other two computers. this worked OK, aside from the first computer needing to be on all the time. Then I bought a NAS a Dlink DNS-323 which works very well as a NAS, but as a print server is ridiculously slow (it works OK for stuff thats less than maybe 50KB, but stuff larger than that it ranges from annoying to ridiculous depending on teh size of the file, big pics (~4MB) take longer than 5 minutes to send . I then borrowed a HP Jetdirect en3700 from an IT guy at work, to see if it was faster. after following the instructions that HP gives, it doesn't work at all. the printer is found and installed and says ready, but then doesn't connect once you start sending docs to it. Granted this is mostly a convenience issue, but being able to print say, from my lappy without turning on my desktop is pretty nice has anyone else had this sort of problem and found a good solution?
