Brother HL-1440 Printing Problem

I have a Brother HL-1440 printer hooked up to a print server. It's been working fine but recently the alarm (red) and data (yellow) lights have been lighting up. I looked on Brother's website and it said that means the toner is empty. Now if I print something and then open up the front compartment where the toner is and then close it, the printer will print 9-10 pages of hexadecimal codes and random characters. If the toner is empty why is it still printing?

It still has "a little bit" left in it. Sooner or later, it will start to fade and you'll have no toner left. You should replace it.

also note that the machine recycles some of its wasted toner so there will always be some left in toner unit dont.. dont rely on that tough.

and remember that brother gives lifetime phone tech support for all of its machines so if you want to make sure you have the right answer you should call them, its free.
