HP Deskjet 672C printing problem

I know the problem is in the printer & not the computer.
When I request printing the resume light starts blinking. When I push it to reset it, the blinking does not stop. The only way I can get the blinking to stop is to turn printer off. I know the blinking is independent of the computer because when I lift the printer lid the blinking starts & I cannot get it to stop except by turning the printer off.
I cannot get the printer to print a test page or do alignment etc.
This is not as "paper" related problem.
Just as this problem occurred there was very briefly an error message on the screen, but it was gone before I actually had a chance to read it.
I know the printer is old, but it has worked reliably for several years.
