Pesky Printer Problem

HP InkJet 722c printer is printing out copies with tiny text too small to use. Tried some printer adjustments; thought maybe "shrink to fit" was stuck [nope]. Hoping for an easy fix.

Re: Pesky Printer Problem

I hope you're not trying to print from IE7!

Re: Pesky Printer Problem

Funny. I know IE7 is getting a bunch of critical remarks..lol.
the answer is yes, because I faithfully updated my computer using the MS updates.
The hope of an easy fix is based on fact that I may have overlooked a "print" setting.

Re: Pesky Printer Problem

The reason for the small text is that IE7 defaults to "Shrink to fit". The short term solution is to go first to "Print Preview". then select "100%" and print (hopefully selecting the correct orientation!). This apparently is another "improvement" to avoid the clipping of the right edge of documents....

My permanent solution is to use Firefox.

Re: Pesky Printer Problem

Opera ftw.

I was having a similar problem when I had to use IE, I copied the text to Notepad and printed from there. Kraftwerk's solution is probably better.

Re: Pesky Printer Problem

This thing was nagging me all morning, and I did some more Googling. Came up with this link: http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/sho...&tf=0&pageid=1
(you need to scroll down to find a post from "Anonymously Me" with a timestamp of 21 Jul 2007, 10:51 PM UTC. I'll cut'n'paste the content here just in case (make sure that the registry fix gets entered in one line):

Here's a fix to default printing to 100% instead of "shrink to fit". Only problem is that it requires users to apply this.

users with ie7 need to install this hotfix

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931768/en-us

the hotfix above contains several fixes, including

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932538/

After applying the hotfix, u need to add the registry value. u can copy and paste this in command prompt to update it

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_STF_Scale_Min" /v iexplore.exe /t REG_DWORD /d 100 /f

restart the browser and no more shrink to fit, unless the user manually specifies it. this is the way it should be by default in my opinion

I apologize for adding my little spiel here on this subject but the problem goes further than IE7.

I am experiencing this "Shrink To Fit" problem in trying to do a "Print Preview from both Firefox and Eudora my email program. As far as I know though, I am only having the actual very small print problem from email that I print out from that comes from one of our daughters who uses Outlook for their email program.

I did do a recommended registry change and a MS Hotfix though which did not correct the "Shrink To Fit" problem when doing "Print Previews" from Firefox and Eudora though. I don't know if IE7 had the "Shrink To Fit" problem before I did the registry change and hotfix because I don't normally use IE7 and never thought about checking it before doing the fixes but nevertheless, now, after doing a "Print Preview" from IE7 the font size is now set to "100%.

I sure wish someone would fix the real problem which in my opinion is with the "Print Preview" part of the program that sets the default font size to "Shrink To Fit" in the first place... But what do I know as I am just a 76 year olddawg...haha...

Re: Pesky Printer Problem

Does ANYBODY out there have any idea how to fix this "Shrink To Fit" problem when accessing the "Print Preview" from Eudora and or Firefox which then defaults the font size to "Shrink To Fit"???

I think a proper solution to this problem would be for MS to make the "Print Preview" font size default selectable to any font size setting that the customer would want and such that the font size default would be set the same for any program that might want to access the "Print Preview" function. What do you all think about this suggestion???
