[SOLVED] connection probs Canon printer

I have an NEC Lavie C laptop with Japanese OS, Windows XP and all the latest Windows updates (as far as I can tell).

From the day I bought my Canon MP770 printer, I have had problems. We can print sometimes, but usually it takes several attempts that include shutting off the printer or computer or both, and sometimes even reinstalling the printer driver.

I have tried figuring out whether it is necessary to turn on the printer before the computer, but I don't know. Doesn't seem necessary to me.

When I can't print, I get one of two messages.

One says the computer simply cannot communicate with the printer.
One says the printer is offline (but it is obviously turned on and plugged into the computer).

I bought the printer in Japan, so there should be no incompatibility issues there.

What's more, whenever I get the error messages, it is sometimes difficult to delete the intended printing action from queue! I try highlighting the message and clicking DELETE, or I right click on the message and click CANCEL. As with the printing job itself, sometimes either of these operations work to stop the job, and sometimes it doesn't.

Do you have another printer cable you can try?

Re: connection probs Canon printer

I've already tried replacing the cable, to no avail. Same problems.

Re: connection probs Canon printer

Yes, the cable is USB type.

It's my home printer. Nothing else is ever connected to the computer (laptop) except a web cam for Skype and MSN Messenger.

Re: connection probs Canon printer

Let's make sure your system files are not damaged. You will need the XP disc in the cd/dvd drive to do this.

Re: connection probs Canon printer

That seems to have done the trick. I have tried printing two times (that is, once each after my computer and printer have been turned on separately twice), and it worked. Didn't even need to put in the XP disk. Thanks!

Re: connection probs Canon printer

Great. Sometimes if you have the cab files on the hard drive, it will use those and not ask for the cd.
