Hp 4110 Aio

I have a Dell XPS 600 with Pentium D CPU at 3.20GHZ, 3.19GHz and 2GB of RAM. The operating system is Windows XP Home edition. When I cannect the HP Officejet 4110 All In One printer into the USB port the computer does not boot. It freezes before the Windows splash appears and the only thing on the black screen you see is a blinking cursor in the top left corner. If I boot the computer without the printer and connect the printer after, both the printer and the computer work OK. Dell's tech support suggested a more powerfull fan, they exchanged my computer with a new one twice and at the end the sent me a new dell printer but the printer is much lower quality and comes with no stand alone fax which I use a lot.
They can not resolve the problem.
The computer has no problems booting with other printers whether HP or other brands. Also, if I connect my HP 4110 to a different computers, it works without any problems.
Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Re: Hp 4110 Aio

I'm glad to hear they sent you new machines.

If new computers didn't solve your problem, I'd start looking at the printer itself. It seems HP printers don't like Dells very much.

You could try downloading the driver directly from HP.

Re: Hp 4110 Aio

I would recomend that you check your BIOS (if your are comfortable with that sort of thing.) and make sure that your USB Emulation is turned off for the USB ports. Also if you have any option for it, make sure you are not set to boot off USB ports. Sometimes this would include the No Boot option being set at the same place USB Emulation is set.

I don't have my list of steps for how to do this with a Dell BIOS ATM but if you are half way comfortable in the BIOS you should be able to do it on your own. If not, then I would recomend getting someone to help you.

Re: Hp 4110 Aio

Thanks dm01,
Yeah, they did send me new computers 3 times. Go figure...
I downloaded the drivers directly from HP with no effect. This printer works with two other Dell computers, so I assume it hase to be something with the BIOS or the USB setup on this particular XPS 600. I am just to chicken to play with the BIOS. I did update the BIOS but that's as far as I can go. It is not such a big deal but I love this printer and shame on Dell.

Re: Hp 4110 Aio

I would uninstall all printers (and drivers) real and virtual that are currently on the Dell.
Then go to HP support for Officejet 4110 drivers.
Here you will find instructions and drivers for your OS.

Re: Hp 4110 Aio

The problem is that the most common reason for this is that the computer is trying to boot off the printer. This was a common issue for Dell computers and HP printers a couple of years ago.

If you can't make the required change in the BIOS then I would recomend that you leave your printer turned off when you start your computer. This should accomplish the same thing.
