HP K60 making b/w copies

Hi - I cannot use my HP K60 to make copies without using up colored ink!
When printing from the computer I changed a setting to stop printing everything in color, but I cannot seem to only use black ink when making an "old-fashioned" copy of something by running it through the machine! I tried to get around this by removing the colored ink cartridge but of course now the machine won't function unless I put it back in place!

Of course I am convinced HP is trying to rip me off by using lots of color ink that is totally unnecessary!!!!

Re: HP K60 making b/w copies

some machines auto sense if they are making a colour or black and white copy by looking at the scan and detecting any colour.
Can you select b&w on the control panel or turn off "auto colour select"?(Ricoh terminology)
Does the original you are copying have colour on it?
