Applying thermal paste
Hi. I got a Masscool 8WA741 cooler for my Intel C2D E7200. I applied some thermal paste to the cpu, but should I have also applied it to the heat sink too? I read that you should apply it so thin that it looks like there's barely any on it, so how do I know if there's enough? It's Antec thermal 5 silver. Thanks.

No need to put it on the base of the heatsink, just on the cpu. Check your temperatures with something like Core Temp to see how it's working. http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
You should idle in the 20's or 30's Celsius, or thereabouts. Let us know what it reads.

That is a tad warm for idle, I'd rather see it under 40 at least. You can run with the cpu at that temp, it's when you get up to a full load that it's going to go above the Intel heat specification. Did you use the Arctic Silver instructions as posted above by Tumbleweed36? Probably worth trying again. Clean all the old off with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and try with the instructions. The pictures help that way, gives a rough idea of how much to use. Also make sure that all four legs are solidly mounted to the motherboard, one loose leg is all it takes to raise temps a significant amount.

edit - also check your temps and actual voltages in the bios for the +3.3, +5, and +12 volts. They should be in a PC Health or Hardware Monitoring or somesuch.

That's ok for a cpu temp, and the bios is considered the most accurate measurement.
If the game froze, you should check your video card temperatures. Download gpu-z and check on the sensors tab for temps and while you are there, note your fan speed. http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

I just read the instructions on applying the paste. You're only supposed to put a line of it on the cpu and that's it? I thought you were supposed to spread it out on it. Weird. I'll try that and see what happens. My paste has been sitting in a drawer for a few months. Do I need to get more or is there a way to remix it or whatever??

Months is fine, not a big deal at all. They also recommend that you store the paste with the tip down, so that any separation goes to the back and has less of an impact on the paste that comes out first. If it was a few years, it would be different.
More is not better when it comes to thermal paste, too much and it becomes an insulator itself, it will spread when you use the line method and make a very thin layer.

Should spread ok. The twist is before you secure it and right after you put it on. Try it, and if the temps are too high, do it again. Always good practise anyway.
