cd rom not compatable

I get this message every time i startup, i have tried 3 differant ide cables,
I just left it to AUTO for the cdrom to find itself, no good, tried to preset cdrom in BIOS, but still no good, tried another cdrom but still the same answer." secondary master drive ATAPI - incompatable "

I have a new SATA installed, and it comes up at post as third primary, i have tried taking the battery out for a couple of hours but still no good, moved the jumper on the mobo and then reset it, but same thing.

I went device manager to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, as this is what is displayed;

Intel[r] 82801 EB ultra ATA storage controllers
Intel[r] 82801 EB ultra ATA storage controllers
Primary IDE channel
Secondary IDE channel
Secondary IDE channel
Standard IDE/ESDI hard disk controller

when i double click the first one it displays ; device is working properly, but the device usage is not enabled. [location PCI bus 0, device 31, function2.
when i double click its duplicate;.....working properly, device usage is enabled.
PCI bus 0, device 31, function 1.

When i double click Primary IDE Channel, ... is working properly, location primary channel, usage device enabled.

when i double click the secondary,... is working propely, device is enable, location -second channel.
when i double click its duplicate,i get the same as above this.

when i double click IDE/ESDI hard disk controller,.... is working properly, no device usage, location Primarly channel.

Can some help me sort this out please, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for replying Dai,
I have only the one SATA hardrive, i set the CDROM in BIOS to primary master
and restarted got same result " primary master - ATAPI incompatable "
So i put the cable into primary slot on mobo and left the settings the same in BIOS -same result Primary master -ATAPI incompatable.

So then i tried to set Auto in BIOS with the cable still in IDE no1 SLOT, strangely windows started up without any hesitation, but still no cdrom in my computor.

In the IDE configuration, should it be set to " enhance mode" ? and which of these choices is correct ? Given i only have 1 sata hardrive and 1 cd rom.
[ P-ATA+S-ATA ]
[ S-ATA ]
[P-ATA]
I tried [ P-ATA + S-ATA] but still no good.

I should mention that i had just recently loaded up XP windows on it, using another cdrom, and everything was fine until i wanted to put my new cd/dvd writer in, thats when all this trouble started, i have tried the originial cdrom that i loaded up windows with, but still get the same result as the new one.
thanks for any help

I just noticed in Device Manager that there is no cdrom icon in there, there's flopplies and everything else there but no cdrom icon ???

recheck the jumpers are correct
put the dvd as master on the end plug and the cd as slave on the middle plug
check you have not flipped the cable and the line down one side is going into the drives alongside the power plug
with the newer dvd /rw drives you need the 80 wire cable to acheive full speed on them
configure sata as standard eide
set enhanced mode
if this does not help reset the cmos to default and see if it fixes it,you can retweak it once you are up and running

Unfortunatly Dai, none of the suggestions worked.
What i did notice that when i moved the jumper on the back of the cd, is that in "cable select mode" the pc would not even start up, so i am thinking [ guessing ] that something is noticing the presence of the cd but nothing else.

There is no cdrom in Device manager at all, when i d/click the disk drives, only the hardrive shows up, is this strange ?

appreciating your help so much

Still no good, unfortunaly, tried and must have checked a milllion times over in every position, changed cables also but still will not reconize the dvd.

A had a spare motherboard, so i installed that today but didn't change a thing, put the other dvd player in [ the one that i installed windows with, but still will not pick it up.

I also tried another hardrive, that i know does work, but it was not picked up at all, so then i put the original hardisk back in, reset cmos, and it then picked that one up again.

It always only picks up the hardrive as 3rd master, never 1st or 2nd, like normal ???

This no cdrom in device manager, my computor, and of cause ,nothing in BIOS, even tried to set cd in manualy in the BIOS, but still no chop.

When i have a look in add Hardware section, i have others also but these might be worth a look at.

WDC WD800JD - 60LSAD
Standard floppy disc controller
floppy disc drive
Intel[R]82801EB ultra ATA storage controllers
Intel[R]82801EB ultra ATA storage controllers
Primary IDE channel
Secondary IDE channel
Primary IDE channel
Secondary IDE channel

I double clicked each one and it says that " this device is working properly", but why 2 entries ? seems a bit strange to me,

Thank for all your help

May help if i give more details of motherboard, ASUS P4P800S-X
ACPI BIOS Revision 1009, 478 socket 3.00ghz, chipset -intel i848p

I have been at the motherboard manufacturer site and may have found something here about SATA -referance 1009
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us
It won't allow me to give the exact page, only if you fill the 3 block question up in the right hand corner, [motherbord/ p4p88s-x etc,] then it takes you to that referance i would like you to see.
Thankyou so much.

Thanks Dai, i rechecked the ide cable, its right, the red side is next to the power, the dvd is set to master at the jack on the back[ have tried "cable select" and the machine wouldn't start]
IT can't be the actual dvd /cd because i put my older one in and got the same result.
There is something going on, because i had to install my printer twice in 2 days, luckily it automaticly installed from manufacturer.
I have run AVG, SPYBOT, ADAWARE a few times, but nothing comes up,weird though, loosing drivers like that.
In desperation, i have been hunting all over the net for answers, one said to install adaptec ASPI drivers, been to their site but can not find the proper download, just confuses me more.
When i get that message that ATAPI is incompatable, i looked up what ATAPI meant, suppose to be not a driver only a support, so i don't know whats happening, what a nightmare this has been.
thanks heaps for your help.

Could the master ide controllers be causing this ? just something that i come accross searching on the web.
I was fooling around with Nero tool box, and seen that i do not have ASPI in my sytem, as Nero gives the choice of using theirs ???

Makes me wonder if it has anything to do with having duplicates of " Intel[r] 82801 EB ultra ATA storage controllers, as posted earlier, and having 2 primary channels, with not all of them are ENABLED.
