Hard Drive Copying
Hello.
Okay I currently have a 120 gig ATA Hard Drive. I am thinking of buy a SATA 320 GIG HD. What program do I use to copy my drive over to the new one? And will it be a problem doing that from an IDE to a SATA drive? And will I be able to use a SATA drive as the master and an IDE drive as a slave? And sorry if this thread isn't in the right place. I wasn't sure. Anyways I appreciate any help. |

You can get free installation programs from the major drive makers: Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate. The programs copy the contents of your old drive to your new drive as well as do other things like partition and format. If you get the retail version of the drive then it comes on a CD in the box. If you get the OEM version of the drive then you can download it from their websites. And it's okay to run both SATA and IDE drives at the same time. You don't set one up as master and the other as slave. That's just a way to share a single IDE channel between two IDE hard disks. The SATA drive will be on its own SATA controller and you can have the IDE drive set up as master on its channel or it can be slave if you prefer.

Okay great, thanks for your help. Yeah the HD I am going to get is an OEM version so I guess I will have to download the program. It's a 16MB Cache 350GB Sata for 125 bucks.. Good price? It's a Western Digital.
