Zalman CNPS7700-Cu on a ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe
I'm having trouble installing a Zalman CNPS7700-Cu heatsink on my ASUS P5GDC-V Deluxe. Zalman lists this motherboard as compatible, but there is gap between the S-type Grip and the Clip Support that is about the length of the screw that is supposed to bind them together. I have no clue how such a large gap exists when the heatsink is making contact with the processor like it should.
In the installation video on Zalman's website (zalman.co.kr) they show the heatsink flush with the processor and the S-type Grip flush with the Clip Support...whereas in my installation the grip is not flush with the clip support at all. Am I supposed to install the FHS itself in a certain direction? I have aligned the Clip Support with the socket lever, and I've installed the backplate (on the underside of the motherboard). Am I installing the grips incorrectly or what? Is my motherboard really compatible? |

I solved my own problem. I read from others that the Zalman (USA) technical support guys recommended bending the metal so that the grip was closer to the clip support. Each grip is part of a single 'V'-shaped piece of metal. I used some pliers (one part on the grip, the other on a screw head) and bent the grips on both sides downward. Then when I tried to install I could easily fasten one side, but the other side was still very high. I pushed down, making sure not to use too much pressure, and fixed the screw into the thread and slowly screwed the rest of the way.
Since I didn't bend the grips far enough, I've probably put too much pressure on the motherboard. I hope I didn't break it! |
