Problem with video's

ok, i have this problem with Real Player, wmp, and win amp, i cant view video's i know i need a codec, i have DivX player they work fine in there, but it only plays AVI files so i cant view some files on it when i try to view some files, it says its not a valid avi file, any one know what Codecs are really good to use for these programs? i had Nimo i think its called, but my friend told me to get rid of it becauase its known to mess up computers. i also had VLC player my pc froze for 10 minutes when i tried to use it, i dont know why, my pc is new.

My System

what are the types of videos you are trying to play?

.mpg? .avi? .wmv?

most of these files need a different type of player, for example, some avi's are div-x, and some aren't.

i will say that my div-x plays anything except quicktime movies. .mov

and my windows media player won't play div-x. and neither will winamp.

so it's dependent on what you are trying to play.

by any chance are you using div-x version 5?

i think because of legal action against them they took some abilities away from the player.

i myself noticed it was unable to play alot of the videos i have, so i rolled back to div-x 2.5.2.

hmm, i am starting to wonder if the videos you are playing are corrupt.

i mean, i thought about it some more, and winamp and win media player wouldn't be affected by div-x version.

so, if mpg's won't play correctly in win media player or in winamp, then the problem seems to either be:

1. the videos you are playing are damaged.
2. something is wrong with your system, either in the directx, the vid driver, or the vid card itself.

ok, this is a video that i am positive works.

can you play this one?

EDIT: i downloaded it and unzipped it and played it to make sure uploading it didn't corrupt it, and it still plays. i am using windows media player to play it, although winamp and div-x also play it fine.

(took me a while to find one in my collection that was G rated, and would play in all three.)

Try one of these codec packs. ACE and K-Lite are good and should contain the codecs you need.

strange that win media player wants a codec for it...

i've tried it on three different version of win media player, and it's worked fine each time.
