monitor resolution problems
I'm running a new Viewsonic VA1912wb monitor. It's supposed to be a 'widescreen' monitor, so the optimal resolution is 1440x900. When I first plugged it in, it showed up as 1280x1024. That was my old monitor's resolution, so that was normal. So, I installed the Driver CD, and lo and behold, the resolution was widescreen! Unfortunately, resolution turned out to be 1280x720. When I go into Display Properties, it shows three options: 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x720. Can anyone help? With my old monitor, the choices were 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960, and 1280x1024.

@ karusho
This might be a limitation of your video graphics card...does your card support these widescreen resolutions you desire?

You can check what screen resolutions are supported by rightclicking on desktop and from the dropdown menu, choose 'properties>settings>advanced>adapter>list all modes..' and see if your widescreen size is supported. It may be that the biggest/best resolution available to you is the 1280X720 that you already found.

well i found that there was a newer driver, installed it, and now i can have 1280x1024. Not widescreen, but better than before. anyways, i did that and it doesnt list 1440x900... so i guess ill just have to wait until i get my new computer sometime around april-june for the widescreen resolutions.

You might try lowering the V+H frequencies, or the refresh rate and try the settings again. . If the frequencies are too high they can cause you to have such limitations. You may also try installing a"generic" monitor, that may give you more control over the settings. Be careful though to not select settings that exceed the monitor capabilities, or you'll have a sleeping monitor.

Just a thought but if your mobo has an AGP slot for a graphics card, you could get one that supported your desired resolution. It would be a less-expensive solution if you want/need this to work now or later.
