Expand display to fit screen size

I have tried various resolutions - not the answer. Had a virus, have reloaded varying software inc. an upgrade of Windows XP. The info. previously fitted the entire screen now have a black band at the right hand side.

Would be so grateful for help - it's driving me nuts!!!

Is this on a laptop or LCD? If it's a CRT you can adjust it using the monitor's controls. LCD type screen then you need to bring the resolution up to fit the panels native size (1024x768, 1280x800, 1280x1024, etc etc etc.)
