Flash Drive/MP3 player: XP won't let me load drivers

Ok, so I was being stupid the other day and managed to completely screw up the firmware on my mp3 player/flash drive.

When I was doing it, I figured, meh, I'll just format it and reload the firmware if anything goes terribly wrong.

Unfortunately, its no longer recognized by XP for what it is. So in goes the CD, and I try to install the drivers, hoping I can get it recognized as a flash drive, then I can format and reinstall. No dice, because XP won't let me load any drivers for anything other than "Unknown USB device" which is really making me mad because I know otherwise.... (Even if I point it directly at the drivers, it still says "that location does not contain information about your hardware", which is stupid because it thinks my hardware is an "unknown usb device". Its kind of a catch-22 problem I have here, I need the drivers on to get it recognized as a drive, and I need it recognized for what it is to install the drivers. Go figure.

Any takers? Or am I stuck with a worthless peice of plastic due to my own stupidity?

I've had very little dealings with mp3 players but I know you can go into a recovery mode for some of them when you delete the firmware. If you list what kind of mp3 player it is I or someone else might be able to find that out.

Its a generic 1 gig mp3 player. I know the chip is made by SigmaTel, and the one identifying feature on it is "DMP-100"

There's very little information on it on the internet.

Actually, I managed to solve this on my own, stupid as I am, but thank you for your help. (I really should RTFM more :-/)

Anyway, from the documentation, in case this gets google bombed or something:

Quote:
Using the recovery mode
1 Take out the battery from battery compartment.
2 Press and hold the Play button. Do not release it until step 4.
3 Plug the MP3 player into the USB port of your computer.
4 Hold the Play button for a further 5 seconds before releasing.
5 Leave the MP3 player in the USB port for the next step.
Refreshing the firmware
1 On your computer run the Firmware Download Utility. Go to:
Start > Programs > SigmaTel MSCN Audio Player > Firmware Download
2 The Utility will start to search for your MP3 player. Please wait until the Firmware Download window appears.
3 Select "Format Data Area".
4 Click on the Start button to start.
5 The firmware will be transferred to the player. Please wait until it has finished.
6 Click on the Close button to exit.
