hmmm, not sure whats going on

A friend of mine asked me if i would take a look at his computer
a compaq presario 7360,

he said he is unable to get his computer to boot picture on monitor

so i brought it home, and the first thing i tried was a different monitor,
to no avail,

so i messed with it for a little while and finally got it to boot a picture
turning it off and on again a few times, upon booting to windows
it is extremely sluggish , which i am not sure if that is a result
of malevolent files or if some how it is affilliated with whats
going on with the picture not booting?

i thought at first that it might just be the onboard video
going out but i thought that there would be some kinda
post beep , but there is nothing,

could it maybe be a ram issue?
sorry if any of this sounds ignorant but
am kinda at a loss ..

thanks for any help

boot from the xp cd and choose install
when it comes up with the repair press R
in the recovery console type
chkdsk /r
and press enter
if you go to the hard drive manaufacturers site,downloads/tools and d/l the dos version of the diognostic utility and run it to check there are no problems with the h/drive itself

just curious, but do you think that the hard drive possibly
has something to do with the comp not sending signal to monitor?

i will go run the checks stated above.

thanks again for quick replys
