DVD Burning Help Please**

I am trying to copy my home dvds so that I can have an extra copy of them in case the original goes bad. I have a Iomega super dvd burner, and I am using Movie Jack 3 Ripper to rip the movies. I am wondering, I am trying to put the movie on one DVD. Is there a particular burning method I'm supposed to be using to obtain this or do in most cases you have to burn the one movie to 2-3 disks?

2nd question:
Please tell me the difference between these types of movie files. I'm not sure which one to pick to burn my dvds to a single disk.

*Video CD
*Super Video CD
*AVI
*XVCD
*XSVCD

What the heck is XVCD and XSVCD mean?

Thanks in advance!

If you want to burn movies, doom9 has got an excellent guide.

You'll need a blank DVD and a DVD burner as well as the software they suggest. You can find it here at www.doom9.org. look in the guides section.

It took me a while to figure out the guides, and they may have been updated since I used them but to give you a brief over view of what I do..

1) Use DVD Decrypter (downloadable here) to rip the ISO and a MDS file. You have to set it to read ISO I think (I'm not sure exactly, I'm not on the computer I use to write DVDs.

2) Use Daemon tools to mount the MDS image on your virtual drive (the virtual drive is created by Daemon tools). Find Daemon tools here

3) Use DVD shrink to open the virtual disk with your selected ripped movie mounted on it. Click on Backup and select burn with nero, (you'll need to download the nero demo, it works even when its expired, you can find that here )

4) start it burning.

Hope that helped, I know my guide is kinda shabby and lacking detail so doom9 will probably be a better place to find out how to rip, but thats the method I use.

What kind of DVDs are you trying to copy? Are these commercial DVDs, or DVDs that you've created at home from digicams with video-editing software, or something else?

Commercial DVDs are usually dual-layer. That means in order to copy onto one DVD you'd need a dual-layer drive and dual-layer media. Otherwise, you'll have to be satisfied with two discs, or else get software that can dial down the recording quality to 50% or so. To do this you may have to convert to raw AVI format and then re-encode. This will still give you better quality than any of the "CD" formats you listed.

Formats:

*Video CD - Ultra-low resolution movie format that will let you burn a movie (4-8GB) onto a CDR (650MB). A lot of bootleg movies from Southeast Asia are in this format.

*Super Video CD - Slightly higher resolution than Video CD (VCD). Also known as "SVCD".

*AVI - Raw video file format. These are usually HUGE files, with little or no compression. All other formats usually have significant MPEG compression.

*XVCD
*XSVCD - Hmmm... My guess is that these are just extended Video CD formats, still WAY lower resolution than DVD. Probably XVCD means "Extended Video CD" and XSVCD is, you guessed it, "Extended Super Video CD".

You should be burning DVD format onto DVD-writable media in a DVD-writer drive. You'll get crappy results if you use any CD format.

Give some more information about your source DVDs, your drive, and the media you're trying to use and I (or others) will help a little more.

You don't have the DVD burning software codecs that you need, that's why you don't see it.

Thanks for the info...

I'm not sure what you meant by codecs? Am I supposed to go somewhere to get these codecs?

Inspector Gadget:

I appreciate your help too. I am using an Iomega super dvd external burner and Movie Jack 3 Ripper. It does a great job of ripping the movie I'm just not sure where to go from there. Not sure what format to burn the dvd to (out of the formats I mentioned earlier). Is there a program I can use that would shrink or condense the movie somehow so it can be placed on one disk? I am trying to burn copies of my own personal collection of professional movies (not home movies but store bought-which of course have encryption).

Any other info you can provide would be great.

Thanks!
