Best Cooling System

I didn't know where to put this, so I decided to put it here. Anyway, I'm trying to find a better cooling system for my CPU, because the temperature in my computer is getting rediculous. Using SpeedFan, it says that my Temp1 is around -50F, Temp2 is 154F, and Temp 3 is 145F. Fan1 is going about 5000 RPMs.

Like I said, I want a better cooling system. If this is not the cause of my computer freezing, then I'd like to know what is. I'm running out of ideas.

Hi,

It is quite possible with those temps that it has something to do with shutting down, so you need to get those temps down. Oh, also when you list temps on here, we prefer the C reading instead of the F reading (don't have to convert that way), so please list them that way.

The higher temps are usually due to some of these things:

1) Failure to use Artic Silver between the CPU and heatsink.

2) Putting either too much or too little Artic Silver between the CPU and Heatsink.

3) Using the factory supplied pad between the CPU and Heatsink.

4) Fans in case blowing in wrong direction. (you should have a back fan blowing out and a front fan pulling air in, and the heatsink fan should be blowing down.

5) Ribbon cables that restrict air from blowing over hot components.

6) Turbulance in case by fans that blow the wrong direction.

Take a look at these issues and post back on where you think the trouble might be and maybe someone can help you.

vantec stealth and panaflo fans are good for system cooling. for HSF i recommend thermalright products. other say zalman are good and they are, but make sure to check with your motherboard recommendations because the zalman hsf is pretty big.

do you have artic silver on your cpu? if not, i recommend a good thermal paste such as artic silver.

I bought the Cooler Master Hyper 48 from CompUSA.. I wanted something else, but I didn't want to wait for something to be shipped to me.

This thing kicks butt. It'll work with LGA775, Socket 478, and AMD.

The unit is $59.99 and is not in the same aisle as all their cooling stuff.. namely because it's too large to hang up. It sat on the bottom shelf in a large purple box.

It has 4 heatpipes. They contain a liquid inside that when heated up condense.. I don't totally know how to explain it, but you know how condensation works. Heats up and rises, then falls back down, keeps repeating the process.

The heatsink is huge and all aluminum. The fan is 90mm and operates at a whisper quiet 18.5db. It will go up to about 61CFM of airflow which is very good.

My CPU temperature before (after playing Battlefield 2) was 68-71 degrees celcius. At the LOWEST fan speed (after playing BF2 again) my temperature was at 48 degrees celcius!

As you can see I dropped by about 23 degrees! My computer idles at 37 degrees celcius!

Well, with Celsius...

Temp1 is -36C
Temp2 is 66C
Temp3 is 71C

Also, I can't use Arctic Silver because this is both a manufactured CPU and it doesn't belong to me. So, I can't do such big changes to it. Also, our budget for the cooling system will be $25 and below.

Our motherboard is a BIOSTAR, our processor is an AMD Athlon XP ~1800. If there's any other specs you need...

There's no way your temp 1 is -36c.

If temp 1 is your CPU then that's good if it's 36c. That's very good.

My System

It looks like
Temp 1 is a null reading
Temp 2 is the system or MB temp
Temp 3 is the CPU temp.

If your CPU is running to hot you may want to consult the manufacturer of the system and tell them that it is overheating and have them remedy it.

Yeah good thinking about the null reading.

Anyway, all I know is I bought the Cooler Master Hyper 48 and am very happy with it. At it's lowest fan speed I dropped by 23 degrees!

My choice of cooler would have been the Thermaltake Silent Cat. It is almost the same as what I have, but it can take 2 fans. You would want to get their Silent Cat 9CM fans, not the 8CM. The 9CM's are whisper quiet and a lot more power.

Well, we aren't too sure what is causing the crashes.

Either the computer is overheating, or the power supply is not enough, or something else. We aren't sure. My dad is loathe to take it back in to the shop, which sucks. The place where we would take it in is also the manufacturer, DIT Corporation. Until I have my own computer, I guess I will have to deal with these nuisances.

I can't get a job no matter how hard I try, heh. Guess that's what it's like when you're trying for your first job...

Have you opened the case and set a fan to blow into it? If this reduces the crashing, them your problem is cooling.

You should be able to monitor your power supply voltages with the same utility you use for temps.

DIT Corporation? Are you in the Omaha or surrounding area? Should have asked for advice before buying from them. Buying computers from local shops is risky much like having a contractor do a roof on your house. Check references.

I actually tried using an oscillating fan when trying to install World of Warcraft. Not sure if it helped or not, because I still got a few crashes. Though the game did install after a few tries. Whenever I took a disc out from the CD ROM drive, it was pretty warm, and you could feel it when you put your hand over the holder.

Also, I live in Des Moines, IA, Omaha being on our border. It wasn't my idea to buy from a local shop. It was my dad's. He wanted a cheap computer, not wanting to spend much more than $400, which was how much the computer turned out being. We can't afford to buy an expensive computer, seeing as how we are still paying for many things, like a car, the house, bills, satellite TV, an online game rental service, car gas, DSL, etc.
