Are you talking about the IAR software or the JTAG Dongle?
The software is free. Go to TI's support page for the MSP430 and it'll list the IAR "Kickstart" package which is a free download and works for up to 4K of object code. Whoa, I'm now using it for between 4K-8K of code; how did that work? It may work on the full 8K. You can get a fabulous, cheap JTAG dongle for $20 from Image Craft in Palo Alto, CA. It's the "Olimex JTAG Programmer for the TI MSP430" at the bottom of their hardware ordering page . For some reason, it's not on their hardware/TI/MSP430 tools page. Don't worry about it being so cheap. It's exactly the same circuit and components as the expensive ones; it's just made by a low-overhead Eastern-European source and sold for what it's worth. (It's just a 5V-3.3V level shifter.) Is this what you needed? I do lots of MSP430 work so post here or in the Programming forum if you have any questions. - The Inspector |

Used IAR Software development tool for MSP430 needed
hello inspectorgadget. thank you for your reply. I
am currently using the 30 days eval version instead of the kickstart version since it has unlimited code capacity. However, I would like to have the full, non-eval version since I will be using the MSP430 quite often. I just don't want to pay for a brand new software. Another solution would be just to download another 30-day eval after the 1st had expired. I just don't know if IRA had put in a software "tracker". This is why I would like to buy the IAR embedded workbench v3.3 from someone for much less. what do you think? |

Sorry it took me a while to get back to this site. It's been a busy week.
Go to TI's website and look up the MSP430, and then TI development tools (NOT 3rd-party tools). They have an IAR kickstart version in there. It's supposed to only support 4K. However, it appears we've been using it on a >4K project for many months now. Give it a try, it may work for you. Maybe install it on another PC and see if it works on your >4K project. Be sure you get the version that's in the "TI Tools" part of the web site. I've never seen any mention of a time-limitation on any part of its functionality. I'll try to check back more often this week in case you have any other questions. - The Inspector |

I was just reading TI docs about the IAR Kickstart version available from TI. It lists the following restrictions:
1. The C compiler will not generate an assembly code list file. 2. The linker will link a maximum of 4K bytes of code originating from C source (but an unlimited amount of code originating from assembler source). 3. The simulator will input a maximum of 4K bytes of code. So, it turns out all our work is done in assembly, not C. If you're using C, you're limited to the 4K with this version. Sorry if this has been a red herring. - The Inspector |
