YARRGGHH!I have a problem-memory/mobo

I have probably done the stupidest newb thing ne 1 has done in a long time.
(according to my compaq presario manual this is the right way of accessing the motherboard), to access the motherboard's features, I slid open the desktop and checked the type of RAM I had. Hmmmm, it turns out that it is 2 64MB pc100s on a snail-like system (It really does feels like a snail) I brought back in 1999. Well, here is the problem. After checking the RAM and closing the mobo back up I could not get my OS, or anything for that matter, to boot up (there is a blank screen on the monitor although everything is turned on and everything is connected properly). Im leaning towards the mistake(s) being:

1. maybe while checking the ram I fizzled it with static electricity, ruining the RAM and/or its connection to the cpu, etc.
2.and/or I reconnected the pc100s wrong
3. maybe just opening the desktop screwed with the motherboard's insides.

According to my "trusty" presario manual. It states that to prevent static electricity when opening the desktop, touch its metal outside wall before touching the motherboard, welll that is the instruction I followed and still my system is screwed up.

First and foremost, before I head to the pc repair shop, I want to know what exactly happened and how to fix it. If ne1 can help in that regard, I would appreciate it. Is my hard disk still safe? do I need to upgrade memory to fix the problem? do I need to change the motherboard? or am I done for and my system is ruined forever?

Hello There,

You need to take that ram back out and reseat it. For example, when you put it back in, make sure it lines up with the slot and then make sure it is clear down in the slot and the little clips on top are straight up (not tillted out in any way) Some times you have to rock them slightly to get them down once you get them lined up. I would bet this is your problem.

Cool

Ive tried reconnecting it multiple times. When I do, it fits in with a pop and looks like it is seated properly to me. Im seriously leaning toward it being a static electricity problem. I am 91.7 percent sure that I didn't dislodge any cables also. maybe I did place the ram back in on the wrong side , not upside-down though. trust me, guys, Ive tried a ton of different things.

I am gathering some false hope that my hard disk wont be busted.

Your hard disk should be safe, unless you took it out and rubbed your socked feet on the carpet trying to shock it

Did you check the video card? and the cable between the card and the monitor? Maybe you bumped the video card when messing with the ram.
