You cannot have part of the memory run in dual channel mode and the other part in single channel.
Now i dont know what motherboard you have and how many memory slots - but it sounds like you have 3. What you can do is buy another 512Mb stick and have 2 x 512Mb sticks operate in dual channel mode. As soon as you add the other 1Gb all 2Gb will run in single channel mode.

Well first i have to add to my last post that dual channel mode will only be possible of course if your chipset supports it.
To find out your PCs components try this program: Everest Home.

Crucial system scanner will scan your comp and advise what memory is right. You are not obliged to then buy from them, although they are one of the best.[IMO]

As long as the board has 3 slots then you'll be fine. If Dual Channel is what you want then you won't get it unless you use just 2 sticks of the same exact type. If you just want more RAM to play with then max out each slot.
