Brand new system, HELP please
Hi all,
I have just updated to a brand new system, i have got all the disks that come with it, but i don't know really were to start. I am running XPsp2 at the moment and would like to be able to ghost all my info over to the new drive if i can. The present drive i am using now is not very old, and i would like to add this one as a storage drive to my new PC, this one i am using now has 3 partitions, 1st drive is the OS drive, the second is the downloading and storeage drive, and the 3rd is empty with 15 gigs of free space in it. I hope i haven't bitten more off than i can chew, i am very iinterested in learning, i am retired now with heaps of spare time and computors are fast becoming a great hobby. I would really appreciate any help, thanks in advance Tuby Last edited by Tuby; 06-18-2005 at 06:36 PM. |

In most cases if you buy a retail version of a hard drive it will come with a utility to copy your old hard drive to the new one. If you did not get this with your drive, you can go to the drive manufactors site and download it.
This would be easier than using ghost. If you still want to use ghost to do this, please post back with your version of ghost.

It seems that i didn't explain my concerns very well in my origanal post, i'll give it another try, please bare with me, i am new to all this. What i have is a new Celeron 2.4ghz system, they give me a box containing A cd [ EPoX ] which has a Motherboard Manual with it, also i have another instruction pamplet with Intel Celeron D processer with instalation instructions in it, also a small wire with small black connections on each end ,there are 3 colured wires [ black, white, red ] going to each end. I have also in the box, a wide [ 1 i/2 inches] grey connection with red only on one side of it with 2 flat black connections at each end. And a users manual from LITEON. Another guide for E-IDE COMBO instalation, and lastly a Cyberlink disc for DVD and cd combo. Now i hope i have given a better picture this time for you, the part i am confused in, is that, i think i can work out how to connect my old hard drive to the new one, and copy all the files, but my main concern is the driver for the motherboard and the rest of the drivers for the new system, when do they get installed.? Could i copy all my XP files onto an unused partition in my old hard drive then install all the needed drivers before i actually run the ghost into the new hard drive, or is this impossible to do ? or is there a much easy way ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tuby Last edited by Tuby; 06-20-2005 at 12:49 AM. Reason: bad spelling |

Moderator- looks like i have asked for an answer that is far to complex to be answered in the form of a post, may as well shift me on and leave room for somebody else that needs a answer to their PC problem.
thankyou anyway, Tuby. |

We don't give up that easily on this forum.
Can you answer a few Questions that will help. 1 Is the computer running OK at present. 2 Is there any reason that you can't install your old Hardrive on the new computer (we will guide you) 3 You ask about installing the motherboard drivers. WHY? 4 What drives do you have installed on your computer (hardrives, CD etc)

Thanks Kodi, i really appreciate your help,
1- yes the computor is running ok. 2-Ther is no reason i can't put the older hard drive into my new one, with your help, of course. 3 - I thought that all hardware had drivers for them to make them work, you can see by my answers that i don't know to much at all about computors. 4- IF your asking about my old machine its got 1 floppy drive, a cd burner, and a normal hard drive. The newer one has a hard drive, and a combo dvd, cd burner, but now floppy drive. Thanks Tuby |

they either come on your m/b setup disk supported by windows or on a seperate cd old machine its got 1 floppy drive, a cd burner, and a normal hard drive. transfer all to new computer

I would like to transfer all my files that i am using now over to the new hard drive and make the older drive [ the one i am using now ] as the slave in my new system. Thanks heaps Tuby |

you will need to reinstall xp so leave the power disconnected from the second drive and install xp on the new drive and run the m/b setup disk
then connect the power to the second h/d save anything you need from the windows partition on it and then format the windows partition on it,make sure you choose the right one to format and leave the rest as is

Lets get the hardware setup then we can transfer your files.
If you have any questions or not sure about any off the directions post back here. Please don't feel offended if the way I explain things seems to be talking down to you because you have said that you know nothing about computers You need to set the jumper on your old hardrive to the slave position(Refer to the link Dai supplied) Install the hardrive into your new case using the screws that you took out to remove it from the old case The wide flat cable that is connected to the hardive in your new machine should have a spare connecter about half way along its length, this needs to be connected to the hardrive you are trying to install. The connector should have a raised key on the outside that will prevent you from putting it in the wrong way. In case you have one of the rare ones that does not have a key, look at the cable and you will find that the last wire on the edge will be coloured red or maybe yellow . When you connect the cable the coloured wire should be on the side nearest to where the four pin power cable plugs in. Plug in the power lead, this one will only go in one way. Guess what You're done Dont put the side on yet, connect up your keyboard mouse and monitor put in the power cord and fire it up Good Luck

Hi Kodie, I am not in the least concerned about your questions, i would be doing the same if it was me helping some one else witih something i can do and they can't. Please don't even think that way, i was only sorta making 100% sure that you knew that my PC knowledge was very little, i don't feel loked down on at all, as every one has to start somwhere. . I fully understand most of what i have learnt so far, but putting my older hard drive in my new machine as a slave to the new empty hard drive, how would the files get transferred to C.drive then? Just say i put my older hard drive in the new PC, would it work ? and or can i do this, then put in the cd for the motherbored , this is what i don't understand, i would like to just transfer old my files over to the new one without having to go through a lot off setting up again. thanks Tuby. |

Once you have the hardrive set up as per the instructions above you do not have to do anything else to it, the hardrive should work OK.
You then have to copy the files from one hardrive to the other using windows XP that you alredy have installed. You can then format the old drive and end up with a nice clean drive ready to put whatver you like on it or if you want to you can leave them where they are and you can access them from there,

the computor has just recovered from a serious error. Error Signature: BCCode:c2 BCP1.0000007 BCP2 000000 CD4 BCP3 E2F9D08 BCP4:E1E3C560 OS Ver :5_1_1.2600 sp:2_0 product:256_1 where it says " click here " C:\DOCUM^1BRIAN\locals^1\temp\WERb 17 dir 00\Mini 062505.01.dmp I used online Trend micro scan, but nothing come up also spybot, adaware, Panda, all come out clean. So i tried Microsofts support, re-" the computor may automatically restart, or you may recieve a serious warning " Nothing happened untill i got to the last question no 8, where they say to search for ' Msupd.exe ' and a few variations of that, and i did manage to get and few of them out and put them in the rubbish bin, and a few entries that did come up as well also, were from E.drive not my main drive " C.drive", then the dam machine restarted on me, and then of course i lost them i went searching for them for a while and getting no where, so then i decided to format the other 2 drives., i will see what happens now.
