Advise On New Monitor

Hi,
I'm wanting to buy an LCD flat panel monitor of at least 19", anything bigger than that seems to be a huge price jump. Anyhow, I am overwhelmed by the numbers of monitors and manufacturers to choose from. Can anyone give me a list of brands to stay away from or any recommendations? I would assume that Sony and other big name brands are the best, but I'm not wanting to spend the money to get a top-tier brand.

Thanks for the help.

What do you plan to do? If you're going to do graphic work I'd recommend a CRT from Viewsonic. LCDs simply can't give the clairty and accuracy that a CRT can.

If you're going to do just about anything else and you want to save space then an LCD is a good choice. Personally I like Samsung for their quality and performance.

Really? I was under the impression that LCD's had a better, sharper display than a CRT. Is that not correct? Excuse my ignorance on the subject please.

I dont do any gaming or graphic work, so I guess the answer to your question is "everything else".

Thanks

LCDs aren't very good when it comes to color reproduction and they aren't very sharp if you run them at any resolution other than their native resolution. In both of those cases CRTs are better then LCDs. But if you run an LCD at its native resolution and aren't doing artwork where you must be picky about the colors, then LCDs are the best choice. They're incredibly sharp at their native resolution and their colors are fine for most non-critical uses. AnandTech has a fair number of 19 inch LCD comparisons although they do tend to concentrate on the higher-end models. Both Dell and Samsung tend to have good reputations on many of their models. Sony's reputation is that they're a bit overpriced.

If cost is the issue then a CRT is the obvious answer.
