I purchased a pre-owned Dell C600 Laptop. The seller advertised the unit having a Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor 850 MHZ.
My check on the unit reads as follows: x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6 Genuineintel ~ 701.... My question is this the same as the PIII or am I looking at the wrong information. Please advise |

sometimes laptops use a speed control to save power.
because of this, it sometimes will lie about it's speed. (because of this, i got myself a 600 mhz laptop for free, because someone thought it was a 150mhz.) to find the true speed, you need to go into the bios, and turn of anything named "speedstep" or "smart CPU mode" or anything like that. then, it should run full speed. as far as i can tell, yes, it's coming back as a PIII, just not the 850.

My Athlon 64 laptop will do the same thing. When it's at idle or not working hard it clocks down to about 900Mhz, but the true speed of it is 1.8Ghz.
