Have recently built a new(budget) pc for gaming.Apart from the graphics card (radeon 9600 xt) everything in the machine is supposed to be top notch.
AMD 64 ATHLON SOCKET 939 ASUS A8V DELUX MOBO 120 SEAGATE BARRACUDA IDE DRIVE 1024 RAM 450W POWER SUPPLY I can say i see an improvement on games(nothing to scream about)but general performance of the machine is crap. This machine runs slower that my old dell! DELL P-4 1,9 GHZ 60GB WESTERN DIIGITAL IDE DRIVE 512 RAM Can anybody please give me some tips.I have warranty on the parts but cannot exchange them back for something different(have considered going back to intel!).I did alot of research before the purchase and everything pointed to amd 64 for gaming. However the longer this saga continues the more i am not convinced. WAITING PATIENTLY FOR HELP DJ 4Q PS:Have disabled everything not being used in the bios and have even cleaned the heatsink and apllied more thermal paste.(CPU running at 49 degrees) |

Well what exactly seems slower ? I think you need to explain a lot more in order to find out whats going on. Do you have lower framerates in games, does it take longer for windows to boot or to open programs etc.
Have you checked all settings - is the CPU running at the right clockrate, RAM at DDR400 etc ? Have you tried Sisoft Sandra - and benched all your components seperately to maybe figure out what doesnt reach the speed of similar setups ?

Many thanks for replying! I have run the 3d mark o5 benchmark for graphics.I get a grand total of 1704 compared to other people who score higher with the same graphics card and LESS ram! Have not run the the SISOFT software yet.Think i will try that next. In answer to yr question....Xp does take longer to boot up.If i am installing software it is slower that my older pc(as mentioned previously).Reading stuff of cd is terribley slow aswell.....and this is a brand new ASUS 52x dvd/cd rom.Could this be because i am using XP professional (compared to home edition)along with service pack 2? Unfortunately i do not know too much about computers but since i have purchased this machine..............JEEZ have i learnt alot! All advise is much, much appreciated. Regards DJ 4Q |

Yes Sandra would be good - there you'll see if its your CPU, RAM or maybe a diffrent component that is unusally slow.
One of the things id also check first is to make sure your drive(s) arent stuck in PIO mode: Go to start, control panel, system, device manager, IDE ATA/ ATAPI, Primary IDE controller, right click properties, advanced settings tab, what does it say under Device 0 for: Transfer mode: Current Transfer Mode: ??? I really dont think its because you use XP Pro - there is not one reason why Pro should be slower than Home.

Its a benchmark program. It tests your components and gives you a performance rating - that you can compare to other similar systems to see how well yours is doing - and if certain "tweaks" (lets just say for example you tightened your memory timings) improved performance and by how much.
It also lets you run a "burn in" test - to stress your components to make sure they are all stabil.
