Going from this:
http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard...t_GA-6WMM7.htm The fastest CPU supported is a 850Mhz PIII. I really dont think this upgrade would produce a reasonable speed increase - unless you can find such a CPU really really cheap.

No not really. You have to be very careful not to bend any pins and follow some safety rules concerning electrostatic discharge but switching a CPU is simple.
You would also have to change the settings for clock speed and multiplier. I think on this older board its probably done by dip switches. I just checked e-bay and there are hardly any P3s with 850Mhz. I think it will be pretty difficult to find one. The few i saw on ebay were 20$ and more... which i dont think is worth it. Maybe its time to think about upgrading motherboard, CPU and RAM...

Well the PIII is a >Pentium< 3 - and the Celeron is basically a PIII with less cache.

Does your chipset have an "e" on the end of it?
If you look at the latest bios rev history it can handle up to 1GHz P3's. I have an i810e board in my Netvista The cpu check lists are rarely updated on most sites once the mainboard is over ~ 6 months old. Power leap PL-Neo/T 1300C, $99.99 compatible with your board...drop in and go... It's an adaptor that puts a Tualatin 1300C onto your board... Not worth it though on an i810 board...

Yes, but is it really worth it to update a board, that I'd sell on ebay for $10, with a $100 upgrade
You can get used cpu's cheaper online... I can update my board to a P3 933 for just over $31 http://www.jlmtech.net/catalog/index...0343b606b7a168 P3 933 http://www.jlmtech.net/catalog/detai...0343b606b7a168 You just need to verify it will work, http://uk.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/...S_GA-6WMM7.htm F7a(Beta) 2002/10/14 1. Update CPUID microcode F6 2000/12/29 1. Filename: 6WMM7.F6 2. Show 1B Ghz instead of 1000 Mhz as intel spec required (only for PCB Rev.2.0 or above) Intel didn't make a 100 FSB 1000MHz cpu...it's 133MHz...
