Dvd Rw Reads And Writes Dvds But Not Cds

Hi peeps
I wondered if anyone has had this problem before, recently i was cleaning off some of the junk on my pc and maybe a bit more than i should of. And left it at that untill i had to put some files onto disk. When i inserted a cdr it just said insert disk, i tried an audio disk again the same, when i tried a dvd it played fine. I have a basic dvd rom as well and that works fine. the dvd rw did used to work ok. but i think the problem may have occurred when i was deleting stuff possibly my Nortons protected files in the recycle bin. there doesnt seem to be any errors when i looked on device manager. If anyone could help before i do even more damage to my pc with a hammer as its stressing me out. any help would be appreciated in novice lingo please.
