[SOLVED] help - wierd beeps
hey people
Basically i get these wierd computer beeps when viewing online videos (say, a video at gametrailers.com). Its very random, no pattern. beep beep... beep beep... beeeeep boooop beeeep boooop. beep beep. its all over the place. some beeps are long, there are 2 types. beep and boop (funny i know). Its ******* annoying. Also maybe this has something to do with it but, i cant play video games for longer then 30 mins (sometimes less, sometimes more) because it just crashes completely (still screen) and i gotta reset my pc. stupid problem has stopped me from playing games. Both of these problems are new, i never used to have them until perhaps a recent reboot of vista 64bit ultra (which i used 2 use and it never happened also). Power unit problem maybe? help a brother out. peace |

Re: help - wierd beeps
Post your full system specs, including the details from the PSU label.
Update all device and chipset drivers from the manufacturers websites, rebooting after each one. Run the 2 DirectX tests in Start > 'Start Seach' box > dxdiag > Display tab. Any problems listed in the Notes box? Check your voltages and temperatures in BIOS and during fullscreen gameplay using Everest (go to Computer>Sensor window). "recent reboot" - Do you mean you turned the computer off and on again, or did you reinstall Vista?

Re: help - wierd beeps
Do you have all the latest drivers?
Have you made any hardware changes since the last time you had Vista installed? Does BIOS show the temperatures and voltages? See here for a list of PSUs approved by nvidia for your card. Corsair is one of the top manufacturers, but there might be a problem with yours, which is why we need to see the +12V output and temperatures under stress. If Everest isn't showing anything, try again with SIW or SensorsView Try running with just 2gb RAM. If you still get the beeps, test your RAM one stick at a time using a Memtest CD. Direct link to pre-compiled bootable ISO: http://www.memtest.org/download/4.00...+-4.00.iso.zip Unzip the file and burn the ISO to CD (as an image, not as data) to create a bootable CD. SAB Totally Free Burner is very easy to use, just click the BIN/ISO icon to burn. Leave the CD inserted, reboot and go into the BIOS. Change the boot order to 'CD first', save settings, and reboot. This will start the program. Run for one stick at a time (very important, to prevent false readings) for at least 10 passes each.

Re: help - wierd beeps
well the first thing the sensors view said when i ran it is 'warning, cpu temp at 85 C. It kinda jumps up and down. How do i check if the PSU is under stress using this program?

Re: help - wierd beeps
Were you running any other programs when the CPU reached 85C? If not, then this is the idle temperature. To see it under stress, you can run a graphically-intensive program like a fullscreen 3D game for a few minutes, but don't do this yet as it could cause the computer to crash again with the CPU being so hot. It should be kept below 60C.
Does SensorsView show the voltages and any other temperatures? The +12V line from the PSU powers the CPU and graphics card and should be as close to 12.0V as possible (11.4 to 12.6 is acceptable). In your other thread from September you were advised to install a higher powered PSU. The problems you're having now could be related to you not upgrading. We always advise people to install a PSU that is suitable to comfortably power the current specs under heavy stress and has enough headroom for future upgrades. Then someone comes along and says you can get away with a much lower spec PSU. The lower quality PSU is usually cheaper, but never lasts as long or performs as well as a good quality unit, so is a false economy that can damage the rest of your computer. Your CPU is too hot, so turn off the computer, open the case and clean out any dust around the heatsink, fans and card slots with a can of compressed air. Then clean the old thermal paste off the CPU and replace with a small amount of Arctic Silver and clip the heatsink and fan back into position ( instructions here). Switch back on and make sure all the fans are spinning. Cleaning the dust out and replacing the thermal paste should reduce the temperature. To see how the computer performs under stress, leave SensorsView open on the desktop, run a fullscreen game for a few minutes, then alt-tab back to the desktop and take a screenshot of SensorsView showing the temperatures and voltages. Post back with the screenshot.

Re: help - wierd beeps
I dont know if im reading the sensorview right but, when clicking on voltages with both cpu usage and memory usage ticked, on average its at 5v, sometimes shooting to 12 and 20. when playing crysis it shoots up to maximum of 92v and a min of 20v.
maybe im reading it wrong? |

Re: help - wierd beeps
Hit the PrtScr button on your keyboard to take a screenshot of SensorsView straight after leaving the fullscreen game (the readings revert to normal very quickly), paste it into Paint or any other image editor and save as a jpg. Attach the jpg to your next reply so we can see the readings.
If SensorsView isn't showing all the temperatures and voltages, try SIW instead. Have you cleaned out the dust and replaced the thermal paste?

Re: help - wierd beeps
I'm not sure what you've done there, but it's only showing the CPU and RAM usage, not any temperatures or voltages.
![]() It should look like the image below: ![]() You need to replace the thermal paste before running any more games or tests. If the CPU is 85C, it's way too hot. Any chance of getting a more suitable PSU as well? Your 620W is probably struggling with the 9800GX2. I'm logging off now. Back tomorrow.
