CD drive not working

Just as the title implies, my CD drive is not working. It is a Mad Dog CD re-writable drive, it is very old and I plan on getting a new one, but is it the CD drive, or the motherboard? I have already tried putting the cables in different slots, and checked the pins, none of those are out, and also the light on the CD drive comes on, but my computer doesn't recognize it, maybe I just don't have proper drivers?

Re: CD drive not working

The drivers are in the OS. Try the drive in another PC but it sounds like a failed unit.

Re: CD drive not working

Is the drive not being recognised in BIOS or is it just in Windows Explorer?

Have you tried a new data cable?

If you've installed or uninstalled any CD burning software recently, try the instructions below. If this doesn't fix it, it won't do any harm, so it's worth giving it a go.

Go to Start > Run > regedit and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values from this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then reboot.

Important: Make a backup (export) before making any changes to the registry.
