Mouse and Keyboard locking up

Hey folks,

First off, I'm not too computer savvy, so you'll have to excuse me if this problem is fairly obvious and I'm just missing the answer.

For starters, my computer has been having problems that are just....I can't even begin to explain. I don't even know. My friends think its a harddrive issue, regardless, they're working on it for me, and in the meantime they let me borrow another one of theirs which is now having some odd issue that I haven't encountered before.

Whenever I booted it up at first, the fan immediately kicked into overdrive and the computer tower itself began emitting this loud series of beeps. I kept rebooting it until I was able to actually use it. It took a while but it finally was working fine.

I was moving some stuff around while I was chatting, and this box fell and hit the ground beside the tower, and it reverted back to the loud fan and beeps again. Since then I've tried rebooting it, and it will load just fine but it will lock up my mouse and keyboard, making the computer pretty much unusable.

I brought the mouse and keyboard to this computer to make sure they weren't broken and it worked just fine. So for some reason that one is locking them up and it just doesn't make any sense to me.

This is excruciatingly frustrating. Help?

Re: Mouse and Keyboard locking up

It's possible something got jarred loose in the PC when it was being moved. I would suggest removing the side panel and checking the wiring connections and reseating the RAM and any other cards that are installed.
PC beeps are emitted in a series corresponding to different problems.
Counting the beeps can also be helpful.

Re: Mouse and Keyboard locking up

Hard to tell, it's not beeping anymore. It just boots up like normal except that it locks my mouse/keyboard.

I tested them on another computer just to make sure they weren't broken and they functioned fine. I even tapped F2 on the bootup to go into the setup and make sure that the computer just wasn't reading them. Once in the setup menu, I could use the keyboard just dandy, but once I exited it, it'd load into windows and lock out the keyboard/mouse controls.

So, I know it's reading it. There's just something telling it to not let them function and it makes absolutely no sense to me because I didn't change anything at all. What a headache.

Re: Mouse and Keyboard locking up

You know, now that I think about it, since this problem started only a few hours after the computer was given to me, I haven't put much of anything on there, nothing that'd be missed if I lost it anyway.

Could this be fixed if I reformatted the computer?

Re: Mouse and Keyboard locking up

What exactly are the symptoms? Does the PC boot properly? Does it get all of the way into Windows?

Re: Mouse and Keyboard locking up

Yeah. Windows loads fine, it's just that once I'm in I can't use the mouse or keyboard. Dunno how else to say it.

Re: Mouse and Keyboard locking up

Not working is different than being locked up, that's why I asked.

So they work if you boot into Safe Mode? You could try booting from your XP CD and performing a Repair.
