Speakers worked yesterday - Today? Not so much.

Hi Guys,

I'm running a Gateway DX-4200-09 with factory speakers. Speakers were working fine yesterday, and for some bizarre reason, they no longer work.

I have of course checked the Volume mixer - the sound level is set at 89% and it is NOT muted. I have opened Windows Media Player, played an .mp3 and opened the Volume Mixer, and the green bars are moving up and done rhythmically - so the computer knows sound is being played.

Assuming my speakers were blown, I unplugged them and tried them on my laptop. Sound blasted out of them perfectly. NO problem. The speakers work fine. So I re-connected them, taking care to ensure all physical connections were snug & in the appropriate ports.

Through Control Panel, I have checked to see if my drivers are up-to-date. Apparently they are.

But here's the weird thing. I was able to GET SOUND randomly by doing this:

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio Device >

Here I'm presented with 3 Devices: Realtek HDMI Output (working) w/green bars pulsing to mock me, Speakers, and Digital Output device. I click on "Speakers" then click on "enhancements" and then click on "Preview" and I hear the preview sound! It's like a glass being pinged with a small wire-sound.

If anybody can help me figure this out, I would be greatly appreciative. This is so frustrating.

Try uninstalling the audio drivers/software from Add and Remove Programs, reboot, and reinstall.
