USB/MP3 problem Driving me crazy!

Here is the issue that I am having. I have a new SanDisk 256 MP3 and have plugged it into my USB port on my HP Pavillion ze4300. When I plugged it in, it came up with an error that it was not recognizing the device. In the process of getting to that error I would get a pop up over and over again with the voice file (the default folder on the drive) and E: drive listed in the window but it would then disappear, pop up again and disappear. Finally it would say that I am trying to reference a location that is unavailable.

Here is what I have tried… Updated the drivers to my USB ports.
Bought a high speed USB card and got the same results
Tried the Sandisk on a Dell in my office… that worked and worked just like it was supposed to
Came back and tried to look for any new software that I would need or any new drivers as well as any known problems with SanDisk and HP and did not find any.
I do not run the EZ CD creator (a problem I found on the internet with VXD files) on this computer and that was the only reference to a problem that I could find. I
plugged it in again and noticed that while the pop up window is appearing on my screen, the player is going from connected to an hourglass on the Sandisk.

Being tenatious... I called HP... they had me uninstall my USB controllers and reinstall them and when that did not work... they said reinstall your operating system! Damn... they are turning into Microsoft! They did give one good thought... since it is seeing the drive before the window goes away... my computer can see it but does not understand what is in it.

So I called Sandisk. The 15 year old temp there had no clue what was heppening but did suggest that I post it in their forum.

Please tell me that this is a known problem or something that makes sense and that I can fix it.

Many times it's more involved than just removing the USB stuff. Here's my RX for flaky USB disk devices.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

Thanks! I did all of the suggestions and unfortunately... still the same issue. It's like the damn thing is evil! I tried running it on my home desktop with Windows 98 on it and it ran fine... But I need it to run on my laptop! Any advice would be appreciated.
