can't get cd drive to recognize disks!

hello all,
i hope i can get some help here, i'm at my wit's end.
my cd/r just stoped recognizing disks all of a sudden.
it doesn't matter if it's an audio cd/data cd/ or blank cd,
it just fails to bring it up.
i'm using xp (no sp2)
i decided to replace the drive, and ordered this from newegg --
cdrw 52x32x52 rosewill rr-521

now, i installed it, started the comp up
and it was working perfectly.
i burned exactally 1 cd, and managed to get 1 program installed
from a cd.
then it stopped working, it's now doing the same thing as the old one did.

i put a disk in, and it won't even spin the thing, nothing comes up.
i try to burn something, and it keeps saying insert blank disk.

i have completely removed it, put it back in, no luck.
i have tried dissabling it from the hardware manager, and reenabling it
still does nothing.
i hit the troubleshoot button, and it doesn't even pop up a window or
anything, it just sits there.
it says "this device is working properly" as if to mock me!
obviously i'm thinking it's not the hardware, since the same thing happened
with the other cd/r, and this drive worked for 1/2 a day.
i don't know what this could be!

i've looked for drivers for both this and my old one,
and i can't find anything. this brand is like unknown or something
(only paid $22 for it)... but still, i can't find anything out there
except the page from newegg that even has this rosewill listed.

i'm open for any suggestions,
if you have any help... or need more info from me, please let me know.

Hi,

Might be worth a try to replace the ribbon cable since both drives have done the same thing.
