Acer burner

I have just set up my new computer and I am trying to burn the back-up discs. I insert a new DVD-R recordable disc, 16x speed, and clic the icon to burn and it shows that it is burning: the time guage is advancing but then a message comes up saying "error: insert DVD". I tried three DVD's. Can you suggest what I may be doing incorrectly?

Test the Burner by burning a small file to a DVD, it may be a defective drive.
