PC boots up but monitor does not display anything

Hi there,

I bought this PC like 2 months ago, it's a custom-built PC and recently after a few weeks (and one incident where my cat pulled the power plug off the wall, causing my computer to turn off), the PC would boot up and I could hear my OS starting up and all that, but my monitor won't display anything and even tells me to check for signal cables. Only after I turn off the power for my monitor and turn it on again then it would work after two or so tries.

Asus P5KPL-1600 mobo with intel core 2 duo 2.8ghz
Sapphire ATI 4870 1 GB
4 gb RAM
1 sata hard drive
1 dvd writer
1 wireless network card
running on windows vista home premium 64 bit

I've tried re-seating the graphics card and checking the dvi-d cables as well as tested my monitor using a vga cable to my laptop to make sure that they're okay but this problem still persists.

(p.s not sure whether this is the right place to post this :p)

Re: PC boots up but monitor does not display anything

I'm not sure what causes this, but I've had a monitor that had a similar problem, where turning it on/off repeatedly fixed it. After a few weeks, it required more and more on/off switches to get it to work until it completely died.

Have you tired a different monitor? Have you tried your monitor on another PC?
Brand & Model of Power Supply?

Re: PC boots up but monitor does not display anything

It's a 720W Gigabyte GE-P610A-C2 PSU and no, I haven't tried it on another PC or another monitor. Is it possible that it could be the DVI-D cables?

Re: PC boots up but monitor does not display anything

Could be a cable problem............. the easiest diagnosis is substitution.
